Dog Toy Safety & Care

A little planning helps keep enrichment play enjoyable. Always use the manufacturer's instructions for the exact product and supervise your dog when introducing a new activity.

Right size, right style

Choose products suited to your dog's age, size, habits and strength. Watch for small pieces that could be swallowed.

Supervise every new toy

Introduce products slowly. Remove items if they crack, tear, shed components or otherwise become damaged.

Care for food-contact items

Use only dog-safe foods, account for dietary needs, and follow washing directions after feeding.

Know when to stop

If your dog becomes frustrated, tries to swallow components or starts tearing off pieces, end the activity. If your dog shows signs of choking, breathing difficulty or other urgent symptoms, seek veterinary help immediately.

Play is one part of care

Enrichment can complement exercise, training and regular veterinary care. This page provides general information and isn't a substitute for individualized veterinary or behavioral advice.
